TSF plant in Punjab installs W&H Filmex 5-layer cast film line

Toppan Speciality Films in North India was earlier known as Max Specialty Films. The company was founded in 1990 and in 2017, the Japan headquartered Toppan with a turnover of over US$ 13 billion acquired a 49% stake in it. This stake was expanded to 90% 0n 1 February 2022, at which point the Indian company became Toppan’s consolidated subsidiary.

TSF is one of the leading suppliers of specialty packaging including sustainable ultra-high barrier solutions, value-added products for labels, coating, and thermal lamination films for the Indian and global markets.

With an annual manufacturing capacity of 80,000 metric tons and an employee strength of more than 500, the TSF Punjab plant has a state-of-the-art research and development center and several certifications including BRC ‘AA,’ NABL, and GPTW. A strong commitment to customer service and quality has helped the company establish itself in global markets and especially for its sustainable solutions that help customers meet their flexible film needs while reducing the potential impact on the environment.

We have written about the company’s continuous investment in new technology and capacity creation and an example is its recent investment in a W&H Filmex cast film line. The new 2.5-meter wide 5-layer barrier-enabled cast film line is versatile. It includes the W&H Die Control Wizard that together with the five extruders and an extra extruder for encapsulation provides great efficiency and flexibility in comparison to traditional cast film lines and processes.

The film width and thickness change for a new film requires a single click allowing the operator to focus on the other aspects of production. The innovative SMBII extruder screws process all the available materials that are used in the segment. The various components including the continuous dosing systems, well-polished melt pipes, exclusively designed feed block, and futuristic winder technologies make the machine highly efficient and productive. The feed block, die, and chill roll unit are claimed to provide optimal solutions for the fabrication of mono-, multi-, and nano-layer films.

The Filmex line is completely integrated and automated with all the processes from pellet supply to rewinder accessible and controllable from the Procontrol TS user interface console. The automation modules coupled with precision measuring technologies and real-time feedback help to achieve the highest quality specifications and productivity benchmarks.

“We wanted to express that we received excellent service and a good capability machine from W&H. Our product development has hence been fast, and we have very quickly reached the level where we will be launching our specialty CPP range at Interpack in Dusseldorf in May 2023. Support from W&H was seamless and efficient. We believe that this investment will make a significant impact on our business. W&H suggestions have helped grow our specialty product range effectively,” says the Toppan development team. Toppan will be in Hall 10 Stand C98.

“The crew at Toppan Speciality Films is well-versed in delivering high-quality goods in a sustainable manner. Their interest in and purchase of the Filmex was undoubtedly a wise decision since the machine is a one-of-a-kind piece of cutting-edge technology. We hope to keep serving and delivering this kind of excellence in the future as well,” says Divyanshu Katiyar, Technical Sales manager at W&H India.

Packaging South Asia — resilient, growing and impactful — daily, monthly — always responsive

The 18-year-old multi-channel B2B in print and digital platform matches the industry’s high growth trajectory. The Indian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, and Middle East packaging industries are increasing capacity and diversification, with high technology and automation in new projects.

We are mid-way through 2024, and India’s real GDP growth for FY 24-25 will exceed 6.3%. The packaging industry growth will match the GDP growth in volume terms and likely surpass it by at least 2.5% according to our research company www.ippstar.org .

The capacity for flexible film manufacturing in India has increased significantly over the past four years. We expect another 20% capacity addition in 2024 and 2025. Capacities in monocartons, corrugation, aseptic liquid packaging, and labels are growing similarly. As the consumption story returns, we expect demand to return and exceed the growth trajectory of previous years. The numbers are positive for most of the economies in the region – and as shown by our analytics, our platform increasingly reaches and influences these.

For responsible and sustainable packaging, with its attendant regulations and compliances, there is significant headroom to grow in India and the region. Our impactful coverage includes the entire packaging supply chain – from concept to shelf, to waste collection, sorting, and recycling. India is where the leading suppliers to the packaging industry are shifting their manufacturing – an opportunity with stable supply chains and low-cost production efficiencies.

We target brand owners, product managers, raw material suppliers, packaging designers and converters, co-packers, and recyclers. If you want to reach them, your agility and innovation shown on the industry-leading platform can do some of the heavy lifting.
